In the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur's Kota Raya area, amid the hustle and bustle of daily life, lies a story of hardship and resilience that often goes unnoticed.
Zainab (not her real name) and her husband, once living a modest life, now find themselves homeless, their world turned upside down by the callousness of family and the harsh realities of life.
Their story is not just one of personal tragedy but also a reflection of larger societal issues, particularly the failure of support systems meant to assist the most vulnerable in our society.
Zainab's journey from a factory worker in Bangi, Selangor, to a pavement dweller in Kuala Lumpur is a poignant tale of how quickly life can change. Forced out of their son's home, with no means to support themselves, they now rely on the goodwill of strangers and charity organizations for their basic needs.
What is perhaps most distressing is the bureaucratic hurdles they face in accessing assistance. The Social Welfare Department requires documents that are impossible for homeless individuals to provide, leaving them trapped in a cycle of poverty with no way out.
As we approach Hari Raya Aidilfitri, a time of joy and celebration for many, Zainab and her husband face the stark reality of spending the festival on the streets, without the comfort of a home or the means to celebrate.
Their story should serve as a wake-up call to all of us. It is a reminder that poverty and homelessness are not abstract issues but real and pressing problems that require urgent attention.
It is also a reminder of the importance of family and community support. No one should have to face such hardships alone, especially in their golden years.
As we celebrate Hari Raya, let us not forget the forgotten faces of poverty. Let us extend a helping hand to those in need and work together to create a more compassionate and inclusive society for all.
Zakat office of Kuala Lumpur may want to pat a visit to Kota Raya and look for this impoverished couple, now!
