Because of EVs becoming popular, Malaysia’s automotive sector is transforming a lot. According to The Star (2025) during the first quarter of 2025, registrations for EVs rose by 46% to 6,827, accounting for 3.4% of new cars, compared to 2.5% in 2024. An increase in EV sales is mainly thanks to government subsidies, a growth in charging stations and an expanded choice of models for buyers.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadilah Yusof aims to complete 10,000 EV charging stations in Malaysia by the end of 2025, the government hopes to attract more EV investments from around the region. Pressure from the government is causing car makers to consider changes. The Star (2025) stated, Honda Malaysia revealed the e:N1, their first EV model which costs RM149,900 and supports their business ambitions for 2025.
However, there are certain challenges in adopting this new approach. According to Kirennesh Nair (2025), a slowdown in the purchase of fuel-powered vehicles was the cause of Malaysia's EV sales increase of less than 10% in the first quarter of 2025. Additionally, as the industry shifts to electric vehicles, component suppliers, workshops, and dealerships face challenges due to the abundance of fuels, regulations, and tools for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
Despite the obstacles, it is still evident that the transition to electric vehicles is taking place. There will be more EVs on Malaysian roads if the infrastructure, government, and EV companies collaborate. Collaborations with major global EV industry participants and ongoing initiatives to lower the cost and increase the usefulness of EVs will be crucial. Malaysians are realizing that electric vehicles are the way of the future and that this trend is coming sooner rather than later. The nation is headed toward a more inventive and sustainable mobility future with the correct backing.
