Case studies on ESG integration often emphasize the role of digital innovation and regulatory frameworks in fostering sustainable practices. I was indeed fortunate to join the other 65 participants in an interesting webinar on how ESG principles align with Halal Values to drive sustainable growth and ethical business practices. The session organized by International Institute for Halal Research and Training (INHART) - International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) & Malaysian Association of Public Advocacy for Nature (MAPAN). It discussed the key challenges faced by Halal enterprises in adopting the ESG standards, highlighted the fast and emerging opportunities for competitiveness, innovation & global market confidence. Assoc. Professor Dr. Dzuljastri Abdul Razak, Research Fellow of INHART-IIUM was the lead speaker with Accountant Emily Kok, Independent Director, as moderator. The core presentation of the webinar focused on the future of halal industry that would be defined by ESG principles, driven by increasing consumer awareness, investor demand, and a natural synergy with Islamic ethical values. Halal would evolve beyond permissibility to become a blueprint.

Dr. Dzul concluded, “Halal is governed by its principles and Maqasid Shariah that can benefit from the Government investment as announced in MP13 & 2026 Budget.” Pix: INHART

Dr. Dzuljastri, a scholar of Islamic Finance, added “The application and convergence of halal & ESG appeals to a broader, socially aware consumer base, including non-Muslims who associate halal with quality, safety and ethical production. Businesses that successfully integrate ESG practices can enhance their global competitiveness, reduce risks, improve operational efficiency & secure financing more affordably. The principles of Shariah, such as fairness, social justice, environmental stewardship (through the concept of halalan toyyiban) & transparent governance, align seamlessly with the ESG objectives."

I agree with Dr. Dzuljastri on the changing consumer demographic that millennial & Gen Z Muslim consumers are more globally connected and ethically conscious, demanding products that are not only halal but also healthy, ethically produced & environmentally responsible. This shift is forcing businesses to prioritize sustainability and transparency to build brand loyalty and trust. Therefore, the future of halal industry lies strongly in this holistic integration, transforming it into a leading model of ethical & sustainable global business practices that create value for all stakeholders & contribute to sustainability.
