In an unsettling twist, the Gua Musang Umno division has called for PMX to take responsibility over allegations of the government withholding a royal addendum that purportedly directed former premier Najib Abdul Razak to serve his sentence under house arrest. https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/732104

This development, coupled with the Court of Appeal granting Najib judicial review leave to compel the government to enforce the directive, raises significant questions about the transparency and integrity of PMX's administration.

Adding fuel to the fire are allegations by Najib’s lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, that the Attorney General (AG) deliberately hid the King's decree. Shafee’s call for the AG’s resignation, following his controversial appointment as a Federal Court Justice, only amplifies public mistrust in the government’s handling of this issue. https://www.malaysiakini.com/news/732028

At the heart of the matter is a fundamental question: why was the alleged royal addendum not disclosed earlier? If indeed there was a directive from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, it should have been handled with the utmost transparency.

By withholding this information, the government risks creating the perception that it is operating behind a veil of secrecy—a perception that is already too familiar to the rakyat, scarred by years of political scandals and mismanagement.

This case is more than just a legal or procedural issue. It strikes at the very core of public confidence in the rule of law and governance. If the royal addendum exists and was indeed hidden, it reflects poorly not only on PMX’s administration but also on the institutions entrusted to uphold justice and transparency.

For PMX, who has staked his political career on promises of reform and good governance, this incident could be a significant setback. His government is already under fire for various shortcomings, from economic stagnation to perceived inefficiency. The royal addendum saga could be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back, further eroding public confidence in his leadership.

The timing is particularly precarious. Najib’s incarceration has been a polarising issue, with his supporters calling for his release and detractors demanding accountability. For Umno, this development is an opportunity to rally its base by casting PMX as a leader who undermines royal authority and ignores due process.

The issue also raises broader concerns about the balance of power between the monarchy, the judiciary, and the executive. If a royal directive can be ignored or hidden, what does this say about the sanctity of such decrees in Malaysia's constitutional framework?

Furthermore, the public’s trust in the judiciary is already fragile, and Shafee’s allegations against the AG will likely deepen skepticism about the impartiality of legal proceedings involving high-profile individuals.

PMX now faces a crucial test. To restore public confidence, his government must address the issue head-on. This includes:

• Transparency: The government must provide a clear explanation about the royal addendum. If it exists, why was it hidden? If it does not, why has the judiciary entertained Najib’s judicial review?

• Accountability: If there is evidence of misconduct by the AG or other officials, decisive action must be taken to demonstrate that no one is above the law.

• Communication: PMX must engage with the rakyat directly, emphasising his commitment to transparency and reform. Failure to control the narrative could allow his critics to dominate the discourse.

The royal addendum controversy is not just about Najib’s house arrest or the AG’s actions; it is a litmus test for PMX’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the rule of law. In an already polarised political landscape, this issue has the potential to deepen divisions and further erode public confidence in the government.

PMX must act swiftly and decisively to address these concerns. Failure to do so could cement the perception that his government is no different from those that preceded it—a perception that could be politically fatal in a nation hungry for change.
