TOMORROW, Malaysia will mark its 69th Independence Day.
Across the country, the Jalur Gemilang will flutter from homes, schools, offices and vehicles, and the proud cry of “Merdeka!” will remind us of the moment when our nation took charge of its own destiny.
It is right that we celebrate with pride. Independence was not a gift that arrived without effort. It was achieved through courage, negotiation, sacrifice and a shared belief that the people of this land could determine their own future.
Yet Merdeka is not only something we inherited. It is also something we are responsible for preserving.
The strength of a nation is not measured solely by its buildings, highways, industries or wealth.
It is reflected in the character of its people and in the way they live with one another.
Malaysia’s greatest beauty is found in its diversity.
We are a nation of many races, religions, languages, customs and traditions, yet we have learned to share the same space and the same hopes.
We visit one another during festive occasions, taste food from every culture and offer help without first asking about race or religion.
Harmony, however, cannot be taken for granted. It is like a garden that must be tended regularly.
If neglected, weeds of suspicion, prejudice and misunderstanding can quickly appear.
Each generation must learn again that peace survives only when people practice tolerance, restraint and respect.
We often think that safeguarding unity is the responsibility of leaders and institutions.
They certainly have an important role, but national harmony is also shaped in our homes, workplaces, schools, neighbourhoods and online conversations.
It is strengthened whenever we listen before judging, disagree without insulting and refuse to spread statements that may inflame others.
This is especially important in the age of social media. A careless message can reach thousands of people within minutes.
An unverified allegation, an offensive joke or an angry comment can cause wounds far beyond what the sender intended.
Before forwarding or posting anything, we should ask whether it is true, necessary and helpful.
Freedom of expression should always be accompanied by responsibility.
Love for Malaysia is demonstrated through such daily choices.
It is seen when we respect places of worship, protect public property, assist someone in difficulty and show courtesy to those who serve us.
It is present when a motorist gives way, when a young person offers a seat to an elderly passenger and when neighbours look after one another during hardship.
Patriotism is not confined to ceremonies.
Waving the flag has meaning when the values it represents are also reflected in our conduct. We cannot call ourselves patriotic while behaving dishonestly, promoting hatred or treating fellow citizens as though they belong less than we do.
The country belongs equally to every Malaysian who loves it and contributes towards its wellbeing.
Merdeka should also encourage a quiet examination of our own lives.
A nation can be free while individuals remain burdened by anger, grudges and negative thoughts.
When we allow past hurts to determine our present behaviour, we surrender our peace to people and events that may no longer deserve a place in our lives.
Personal freedom begins when we decide that resentment will not control us.
Forgiveness does not excuse a wrong; it prevents the wrong from continuing to occupy our hearts.
Letting go is not defeat. It is the wisdom to understand that our happiness is too precious to be governed by bitterness.
The same principle applies to our life as a nation.
Communities cannot move forward if they continually reopen old wounds or view one another through inherited suspicions.
We must learn from history without becoming imprisoned by it.
Our shared future must be stronger than the differences that once separated us.
Happiness, too, is part of genuine freedom. It does not depend entirely on possessions or status.
It grows from gratitude, meaningful relationships, service and the knowledge that we are contributing something worthwhile.
When citizens feel responsible for one another, the nation becomes more compassionate and more prosperous.
As we celebrate tomorrow, let us remember that Merdeka is both a privilege and a duty.
We have the privilege of living in a beautiful country blessed with cultural richness, natural resources and remarkable people.
Our duty is to protect its peace and ensure that future generations inherit a Malaysia that is united, fair and hopeful.
Let us fly the Jalur Gemilang with pride, but let us also embody what it represents.
Let us free ourselves from hatred, anger and prejudice.
Let us replace suspicion with understanding, harshness with kindness and division with friendship.
The most valuable gift we can offer Malaysia on its 69th Independence Day is our determination to guard the harmony that has sustained us.
May we remain proud of our nation, grateful for our freedom and committed to living together with respect and happiness.
Merdeka is not only a memory of the day our country became free.
