Have you thought about your team’s health? A lot of times, competition is seen to be a business risk but sometimes we forget that our teams’ health is also a business risk if not managed properly.

When I say manage properly, means creating the right environment whereby healthier choices are made by the team members and also followed by manageable workload.

Why It Matters ?

I came across a report in The Star last weekend where Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad highlighted a growing concern about non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and how they are becoming a major economic threat, with over 500,000 Malaysians living with at least four chronic conditions.

When I read that I realized that it is not only about the healthcare but also about the workforce.

When employees are dealing with chronic health conditions, sometimes performance may decline and may also take longer recovery time in certain instances.

So the real question for leaders, HR, and business owners is:

Are we only reacting when people fall sick? Or are we building environments that prevent it?

Why?

Because it directly impacts:

• Productivity

• Team energy and engagement

• Long-term business sustainability

Health Should Be Prioritized

As leaders we need to be able to create the right environment at the working place where health is also prioritized.

Sometimes the shift could be as simple as:

1. Break up long sitting hours with standing or light movement

2. Reducing the caffeine intake

3. Having healthy snacks in the pantry

4.Placing water dispensers at strategic places in the office to encourage water drinking

5. Encouraging employees to exercise

Wellness is no longer a “nice-to-have.” It is a business strategy. The companies that will thrive in the next decade are not just the most innovative but they are the ones that are physically, mentally, and emotionally resilient.

As I say this, the responsibility comes to leadership and leadership must evolve. It’s not only about driving results but sustaining the people who deliver them.

This starts by having an open mindset and looking at how to encourage employees to adopt healthy habits from their diet to their exercise. It could even be, coming up with a reminder app for the employees.

Remember better results don’t come from pushing people harder but they come from equipping them better. The more healthy they are, the more they are able to contribute to the organization and the wider society.

Let’s help create the right environment to help employees to be healthier!
