How a Tiny Spark Turned into the City's Worst Fire in Hours
In what seemed like a scene from a disaster movie, a single home stood untouched amid the devastation of Malibu’s worst wildfire in history. The $9 million mansion, owned by retired waste-management mogul David Steiner, remains an unscathed beacon against the backdrop of destruction. While countless homes were reduced to rubble, Steiner's 4,200-square-foot, four-bedroom house remained standing a testament to its unique, fire-resistant design.
The house, designed to withstand natural disasters, features stucco and stone walls, a fireproof roof, and pilings sunk 50 feet into bedrock to endure the pounding Pacific surf below. These architectural elements proved invaluable as the wildfire swept through the area. To be totally honest, I never thought a wildfire would jump the Pacific Coast Highway, Steiner said in an interview. I always thought the house’s resilience would be tested by an earthquake, not a fire. But the fireproof design truly saved it.
The blaze, which began as a spark fueled by the infamous Santa Ana winds, left entire neighborhoods in ashes. Malibu’s Pacific Palisades area was one of the hardest hit, with over 10,000 structures damaged or destroyed. Officials reported that more than 5,300 structures were lost in Pacific Palisades alone, making it the most destructive fire in Los Angeles history.
Amid the destruction, Steiner received a wave of support from friends who assumed his home was lost. People were texting me, saying, We’re praying for you. It’s so horrible, Steiner recalled. His response was one of humility. Don’t pray for me. What I lost is just material. Others lost their homes, their memories, their lives.
Though his Malibu home survived, Steiner noted it wasn’t his main residence. He purchased the property years ago when two of his sons attended school in the area, but the family rarely uses it now. My heart goes out to those who lost everything, Steiner said, adding, It’s a miracle, but it’s bittersweet.
The emotional toll of the wildfire is matched by its staggering financial impact. Initial estimates place the damage between $135 billion and $150 billion, according to AccuWeather. Government officials have yet to release their own estimate. Tragically, the death toll has reached at least 10, including two fatalities from the Palisades Fire and five from the Eaton Fire further inland.
Firefighters, working tirelessly, reported only 8% containment of the Palisades Fire and 3% containment of the Altadena Fire as of Friday. Authorities remain wary of wind conditions, which could reignite the flames over the weekend.
Malibu’s coastline, once a symbol of luxury and beauty, now lies in ruins. Chimneys stand as solemn markers of homes that once were, and smoke blankets the area in an acrid haze. Among the countless losses are the homes of several celebrities, including Jamie Lee Curtis and Billy Crystal.
Despite the devastation, Steiner’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and resilience. His mansion, a rare survivor, is proof that thoughtful design can make a critical difference when disaster strikes.
