Nobody can tell you the truth. You can only know the truth from your own experience. People can ask you questions about your experiences, or frame your experiences in a particular way, so that you yourself can investigate your experience to find the truth in it, but nobody can find the truth for you.
To be able to search your experience, you have to be an honest person. You need to be an honest person, because if you are not, you won't remember your experiences, and if you don't remember your experiences, you can't investigate your experiences, much less find any truth in it.
Just because we remember our experiences, it doesn't necessarily mean we will understand our experiences.
If we remember our experiences, we will be able to remember things like what happened when we turned away from the beggar who was persistent in asking us for money. Was it a pleasant experience? Were we angry at the beggar or ourselves? What were we telling ourselves at that point to not give anything to the beggar? Did the incident still bother us after the beggar left? When did the incident stop bothering us? Just because we remember what happened, it doesn't mean that we will understand whether what we did was right, wrong, good, bad, something that we should continue doing or change.
But if we remember what happened, even if we don't understand it as it was happening, someday, if somebody was able to frame the experience in a particular way, we can look back at the experience and find the truth in it.
The American declaration of independence lists "the pursuit of happiness" as the purpose of having life and liberty. We can only pursue happiness to the degree that we are able to find the truths in our lives. It is important to be honet, because if we are not honest, we won't be able to find any truths in our experience, and without finding any truths, it doesn't matter how much wealth, power or status that we possess, we will still not be be able to pursue happiness, and fulfill the reason why we are alive.
