The Incredible Michelle Yeoh Awarded a Doctorate by American Film Institute (AFI). A Great Honour for An Ipoh Convent Girl!

On 10th August, over breakfast at my favourite cafe, Huckleberry of Bukit Damansara, I overheard a couple of ladies from the next table saying, "Do you know our schoolmate from Ipoh Convent, the incredible Michelle Yeoh is receiving a doctorate from the American Film Institute?"
I am a fan of Michelle Yeoh and kiasu-styled quickly butted in, "How did you find out?"
"A little bird told me...Google lah!" She laughed mocking my ignorance.
A furious search on Google true enough revealed that on Friday, 5 August, the American Film Institute (AFI) announced that Michelle Yeoh will be conferred a Doctorate of Fine Arts degree honoris causa for her "contributions of distinction to the art of the moving image", over a 40-year career in the film industry.
How did I miss that?
With this award, Michelle Yeoh will become the first Asian artist ever to receive an honorary doctorate degree in fine arts from the American Film Institute (AFI). What an honour for Asia and what an achievement for a Malaysian woman indeed!
The AFI statement also stated, that Yeoh has appeared in more than 70 features and television series, including Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Tomorrow Never Dies, Sunshine, and Crazy Rich Asians.
Michelle Yeoh's award puts her among a highly respected group of past recipients, including Maya Angelou, Jodie Foster, Clint Eastwood and Rita Moreno, etc.
Michelle is expected to be presented with the doctorate on Saturday, Aug. 13, at Hollywood's iconic Chinese Theatre during the graduation ceremony for the AFI Class of 2022.
AFI Trustee Emeritus Lawrence Herbert will also be conferred with an honorary doctorate of communication arts degree for his commitment to AFI's mission on the same day.
AFI President and CEO Bob Gazzale reportedly said "Michelle Yeoh and Lawrence Herbert have inspired the world with their remarkable talents...
"Though both of these trailblazers have proven impact in vastly different ways, it is their shared dedication to the art of the moving image that provides this proud moment for AFI to shine a proper light upon their gifts given us."
Here's a toast to our Ipoh-born Michelle Yeoh Choo-Kheng who spent her early years at the Ipoh Convent school where boys hung out to ogle at all the pretty girls in town. From what I know Michelle easily topped the list. Well done Choo-Kheng, we're so proud of you!
