Former inspector-general of police (IGP) Mohammed Hanif Omar will be remembered as a man whose life was marked by outstanding accomplishments and heartbreaking losses. Although his reputation in the field of law enforcement is legendary, few people know the personal tragedies he and his family endured throughout his life. Here, we take a look back at Hanif's journey and the challenges he faced as he devoted himself to his country and family.

Early Years and Family Heartbreak

Hanif's journey began with the loss of his father at a young age. He was only 13 when his father passed away, leaving him to grow up quickly and become the man of the house. His son, Abdul Rahmat, shared how Hanif’s father, Omar Muhammad, had once told him that within a week, he would lose his "backbone." Tragically, Omar suffered a heart attack shortly after, leaving Hanif to navigate life on his own.

This traumatic loss left a deep impact on Hanif, who developed insomnia and slept only a few hours each night. He used this time to read extensively and educate himself, preparing for the leadership role he would later take on in the police force.

Devotion to Country and the Loss of Juliana

In 1966, Hanif's career took him to Bangkok, where he joined former prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein in negotiations to end the confrontation with Indonesia. Hanif was hesitant to leave his daughter Juliana, who was suffering from a severe medical condition. Despite his concerns, Hanif chose to prioritize his duty to his country.

Tragically, Juliana passed away during Hanif's trip to Bangkok. She was just two years and 11 months old. Rahmat described how Razak, informed of the girl's death, chose to keep the news from Hanif initially, not wanting to distract him from the negotiations.

Losing a Brother and a Son

Hanif's life faced further adversity in 1975 when his brother Ainuddin passed away due to a motorcycle accident. At the time, Hanif was dealing with a critical situation in Sabah and had to rush back to Kuala Lumpur. Despite his grief, Hanif's dedication to his duties took precedence.

Later in 2013, another tragedy struck when Hanif's youngest son, Ahmad Jamal, died after collapsing beside his car. Jamal had been recovering from surgery when the incident occurred. Hanif expressed regret for not having been there to watch his children grow up due to his responsibilities as the IGP.

A Life of Service and Legacy

Despite the hardships he endured, Hanif's unwavering dedication to his country and family is evident in his legacy. His daughter Norazza described him as a patriot, an honorable gentleman, and a loving father. She and Rahmat recalled how Hanif always tried to balance his responsibilities as a police officer and a family man.

Hanif Omar's life was marked by both triumphs and trials, and his memory will live on as a symbol of strength, dedication, and love. His story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve their country, and the impact such sacrifices can have on their personal lives.
