I celebrated my 76th birthday last June. Based on my own experience, living healthy after 75 means focusing on what my body needs to stay strong and independent. The top priority are eating a balanced diet, moving every day to avoiding falls, and keeping my brain occupied by reading, writing, and social life active. As heart patient who already underwent by-pass surgeries, my routine include regular check-ups with my cardiologist to manage medications.
Cardiologist Dr. Siow Yoon Kee, Heart Center of Hospital Sultan Idris Shah Serdang (HSISS), said “Older adults should do some type of physical activity every day. It can help to improve their health and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. It you've fallen or are worried about failing, doing exercises to improve your strength, balance and flexibility will help make you stronger and feel more confident on your feet. Moderate intensity will raise your heart rate, and make you breathe faster and feel warmer. One way to tell if you're working at a moderate intensity level is you can still talk and think positively.”

Yes Dr. Siow, I always encourage myself to keep moving as a great way to help maintain my independence. Physical activity builds a buffer to allow me to maintain function at my age. I realize good mobility and fitness allow me to enjoy hobbies like reading & writing, walkabouts around the greenery parks & malls, traveling locally & overseas, socializing with family, alumni & friends - all part of a fulfilling life that I shouldn't give up just because of my old age.

My wife, Zarina and I pray to live longer and happier, InsyaAllah (God willing) towards a better and healthier life in order to enjoy watching our children and grandchildren growing successfully in their respective lives. We strongly believe of healthy old age is shifting from simply extending our lifespan (how long we live) to expanding health-span (how long we live free from any chronic disease and disability).
