When it comes to the debate of fusion delicacies, the topic of ‘Halal’ has always been raised out among the community.

Is it Muslim-Friendly? Is it Pork-Free? Is the restaurant Halal-certified?

We can always see these questions being asked on social media under the food reviews content especially when it comes to Halal Chinese delicacies.

In February, the government has announced the listing of 9 of Malaysia’s delicacies as our heritage dishes and the listed Bak-Kut-Teh sparked questions in this country where Muslims make up the majority.

According to The Straits Times, the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has made it clear with his statement that the herbs used for the dish are Halal and people can use different types of protein from their preference as the term ‘Bak’ refers to meat which it does not limit to porks only.

It’s interesting to see that these fusion dishes were seen as a controversial phenomenon in the parliament but not among our diverse grassroots.

I believe food is and should be a universal love language to each other nonetheless is it among family, neighbours or even strangers from different races. Having a diverse food palette in a multiracial homeland undoubtedly is a god-given gem that others desire.

Instead of exploiting food for political gain, it's important to approach it with respect and sensitivity to its cultural significance. Respecting food traditions fosters genuine connections and promotes harmony within communities.

In a world often divided by politics and ideologies, food serves as a unifier by breaking down barriers and fostering understanding. Sharing a meal allows people to see beyond their differences and connect on a human level.

Indeed, it is the simplest joy that we can share mutually and it is a way of expression. So, don't turn it into a weapon that harms each other but build the bridge that connects all of us.
