The recent decision by the Transport Ministry and the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) to increase airport taxes has sparked outrage among the public, and rightfully so.

At a time when the cost of living is soaring and the economy is sluggish, the last thing the government should be doing is burdening the people with additional taxes.

Datuk Tan Teik Cheng, MCA’s vice-president, is correct in pointing out that this move not only shows a lack of consideration for the public but also adds to the already heavy burden that the people have to bear.

The increased airport taxes will affect both domestic and international passengers, making travel more expensive for everyone.

One of the most troubling aspects of this decision is its impact on residents of East Malaysia, particularly those who travel frequently between East Malaysia and Peninsular Malaysia.

Since there are no direct flights between East Malaysia and Penang, passengers have to transit through Kuala Lumpur, which incurs an additional domestic flight transfer fee of RM7. For frequent travellers, this additional fee can quickly add up and become a significant financial burden.

It is disappointing to see the government resorting to such measures to raise funds, especially when there are other ways to manage the country's finances without further burdening the people.

We agree that instead of imposing additional taxes, the government should be looking for ways to ease the financial strain on the public, especially during these challenging times.

In conclusion, the decision to increase airport taxes is not only unjust but also demonstrates a lack of empathy for the hardships faced by the people.

The government should reconsider this decision and focus on policies that will truly benefit the people and improve their quality of life.
