The education system, like any other system in the world, will need a periodical review and update. It needs improvements in many areas and aspects. Youngsters cannot be taught certain things that were taught 30 years ago because it simply is just outdated.
I may not be from the education sector (or related thereof). These are just my humble opinion on the Malaysian education system.
Why it needs an update
For the simplest of reasons: children need to be taught an updated syllabus of what is needed in the world and society. Though it is important to learn subjects such as history, literature, and whatnot, it does not mean it will teach the children much. I am not saying the Arts are useless. However, more needs to be taught in these subjects and not just revolve around that few topics only. One way to “update” these subject areas is to incorporate soft skills into these subjects.
Teach the kids how to critically question and analyze what is presented to them. Thinking skills and analysis are just so important like that and it’s worth developing. Memorizing facts is just one part of learning. Don’t forget analyzing and questioning what is presented to you are just as important too.
The sciences may not need as much update but some updates will be good too. New research is constantly being published and updated. Don’t settle for outdated studies. Pretty sure those don’t contribute to the growth of your career.
Education should be something that fits the practicality of society. It should be there to teach people how to be functional human beings in society.
What can be done?
A lot of things needed to be done to change and improve the Malaysian education system. Immediate improvements don’t necessarily change within 24hrs but changes are still needed anyway. What the country can do is gradually phase in and out the necessary changes to our education system. Everyone deserves a fair chance in education and their future.
Families and their kids will need to actively update themselves regularly. If school isn’t teaching the necessary syllabus, then extra reading will be good. No excuses as it will hinder your long-term growth. Always say yes to learning new things regardless of what it is.
Bottom Line
As much as the Malaysian education system needs an overhaul, don’t forget that parents do play a part in their kids’ learning experience too. Learning new things will always be good as long as it isn’t hurting anyone.
