MANILA, Philippines — The Manila Times columnist Dr. Carl E. Balita has been named a finalist in the Best Opinion Column category of the 48th Catholic Mass Media Awards (CMMA).
Balita earned his first CMMA finalist citation for his regular opinion column, “Like a Circle,” which tackles issues ranging from education and leadership to public health, social concerns, history and current events in the Philippines.
The CMMA recently unveiled its list of print finalists, recognizing individuals and institutions whose works were selected following screening and deliberation.
Balita has been writing his regular opinion pieces for The Manila Times since 2023, using his column to discuss issues affecting Filipinos and developments in Philippine society.
A registered nurse, midwife and educator, Balita holds multiple degrees, including a master’s degree and doctorates in Humanities and Education.
He is also the founder, president and chief executive officer of the Dr. Carl E. Balita Review Center and the CEB Group of Companies. He is known for his work in education, entrepreneurship and media, including hosting programs focused on business and entrepreneurship.
Beyond his column, Balita and The Manila Times have partnered on educational initiatives, including the “Education of the Times” essay competition for students and teachers.
The CMMA, established in 1978 by the late Jaime L. Cardinal Sin, recognizes media works that promote Christian values, human dignity, truth and social responsibility.
Now on its 48th year, the awards honor works across print, radio, television, advertising, student media and digital platforms.
Balita’s inclusion among the Best Opinion Column finalists marks his first CMMA finalist recognition for writing.
