In the tragic aftermath of Air India Flight 171’s crash in Ahmedabad, a haunting coincidence has gripped global attention: the lone survivor, 40-year-old British-Indian man Viswash Kumar Ramesh, was seated in 11A. Twenty-seven years earlier, Thai actor and singer James Ruangsak Loychusak also survived a deadly plane crash, Thai Airways Flight TG261, while seated in the very same numbered seat: 11A.
The Air India flight, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed fatally into a building during its final approach, igniting in a fiery explosion that claimed the lives of nearly everyone on board. Miraculously, Viswash Kumar Ramesh survived. Media coverage presents conflicting accounts of how he managed to escape the crash. Some speculations suggest that he may have unlatched the emergency door just seconds before impact, leaping out in a desperate attempt to cheat death and succeeded. Though severely injured, he lived to recount a nightmare that no one survives, except for his miraculous escape from death.
Back in 1998, James Ruangsak’s flight, Thai Airways TG261, an Airbus A310, met a similarly tragic fate while attempting a landing in Surat Thani, Thailand. That crash killed 101 of the 146 on board. James, sitting in 11A, survived with injuries, recounted the harrowing incident as a turning point in his life.
Upon hearing about Ramesh’s escape and the coincidence of seat 11A, James posted on Facebook: “Survivor of a plane crash in India. He was seated in the same seat during my crash. 11A.” The coincidence, while eerie, does not extend beyond numerical fate — the aircraft models, layouts, and circumstances were vastly different. The Air India crash had a lone survivor; Thai Airways had multiple.
Still, the symmetry is unnerving. Two survivors, nearly three decades apart, united by tragedy and a single seat. Is it fate, design, or a chilling twist of randomness? For now, Seat 11A is no longer just a row and number: it is a symbol of survival, of inexplicable fortune amid catastrophic loss.
As the aviation world awaits further investigation into how Ramesh survived, one question continues to linger in the public imagination: Did he jump, or was he simply fated to survive?
