Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a neurological disorder that affects body movement, posture, and coordination. It is caused by damage to the developing brain's motor control centers, which may occur during pregnancy, at birth, or in early infancy. Worldwide, over 17 million people live with CP. About 1 in every 300 children is affected, making it the most common physical disability in childhood. With the right intervention and real support, individuals with CP can reduce complications, gain greater independence, unlock their true potential, creating possibilities and become active & useful members of our community.(www.cerebralpalsy.org.my)

When my grandson, Daniel was diagnosed with CP at the age of 4 months as a result of high fever, it has dramatically alter the life I imagined for him and his parents. Caring for a child with CP requires significant time and energy, and it can take a toll on our family's finances. His mother, Nadja, a professional engineer decided to quit her good job with handsome salary to take full care of her son. Together with his dad, Farouq, they looked for the best CP school.

With the blessings of Allah the Almighty (SWT), we were introduced to GAPS, a registered non-profit organization in Malaysia based in Cyberjaya, led by Founding President Puan Rafidah Ahmad. GAPS (Gabungan Anak-Anak Palsi Selebrum or Alliance of Children with Cerebral Palsy) believes in creating possibilities for CP community to be empowered and have better quality of life. Its leadership & teachers are committed to supporting individuals with CP. GAPS is dedicated to implement the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030 on good health & well-being, quality education and reduced inequalities.

My wife, Zarina & I were fortunate to attend Eid al-Fitr Celebrations at GAPS last Friday, and met President Rafidah who revealed that “Our activities are planned on 3 focal points: 1) Empowerment & Knowledge Building - GREAT Program - Caregivers trainings, workshops and webinars; 2) Socio-Emotional Support & Advocacy through our omnichannel support system; 3) Creating Awareness about CP on social platforms - FB, IG, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn.
