The more things change the more they stay the same.
In the labyrinth of Malaysian politics, a recurring theme is the grim familiarity of cronyism and nepotism. Regardless of which administration is at the helm, transparency remains elusive and connections often triumph over merit. The recent controversy surrounding the Selangor state government's award of two transit system projects exemplifies this persistent malaise.
Satees Muniandy, the United Rights of Malaysian Party’s (Urimai) secretary-general, has decried the Selangor government's decision to award these projects through direct negotiations rather than an open tender process. What’s particularly galling is that one of the companies benefiting from this process, Asia Mobility Technologies Sdn Bhd, is helmed by Ramachandran Muniandy, the husband of Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. The other beneficiary, Badan Bas Coach Sdn Bhd, has escaped scrutiny thus far, but the lack of transparency in both awards has raised eyebrows.
Satees, a former DAP state assemblyman, has rightly pointed out the hypocrisy in the Madani administration’s actions. An administration that once championed transparency and open tenders has now been implicated in favouritism and potential conflicts of interest. It’s a disappointing yet unsurprising revelation that yet again underscores the continuity of political patronage regardless of party lines.
Defending the decision, Ng Sze Han, Selangor DAP’s state executive council member for Investment, Trade, and Mobility, asserted that the projects had been approved by the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) and federal regulators. However, he conspicuously avoided addressing the uncomfortable fact that one of the projects went to a company led by the minister’s spouse. This glaring oversight, or deliberate omission, does little to instil public confidence.
Moreover, the arguments presented by Ng and other defenders of the decision fail to address the core issue. Even if Asia Mobility Technologies and Badan Bas Coach met all the necessary criteria, the appearance of impropriety and the potential for a conflict of interest remain. As Satees aptly noted, the relationship between Ramachandran and Yeoh should have disqualified Asia Mobility Technologies from consideration purely on ethical grounds.
The response from Selangor PAS Youth chief Sukri Omar further amplifies the critique. He chastised the Madani administration for neglecting its own promises of transparency and open tenders, pointing out that such direct negotiations should only occur in matters of national security. The current scenario does not fit that bill.
This saga is a stark reminder that the political landscape in Malaysia is marred by the same old practices, regardless of which coalition holds power. Pakatan Harapan (PH), under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, pledged to break away from these traditions. Yet, the Selangor government’s actions reveal a disturbing tolerance for nepotism and cronyism.
While the details of Badan Bas Coach remain murky, the call for an investigation into both companies involved is justified. The public deserves transparency and accountability, and the state government must address these allegations head-on. Anything less would perpetuate the cycle of distrust and disillusionment with political leaders.
In the end, the narrative remains unchanged: political connections and favoritism overshadow merit and ethical governance. Until these deep-seated issues are genuinely addressed, Malaysia’s political arena will continue to be plagued by the same old story of nepotism and cronyism, regardless of the administration in power.
Editorial note: (MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said so far there was no wrongdoing according to the law following the award of the contract to Hannah’s husband.)
