MyAeroSatu executive committee's zoom meeting held on 09 June, noted that AirBorneo is facing severe public scrutiny & operational friction following its takeover regional routes from MASwings. According to Dato' Dr. Amin Khan, an accomplished technocrat and corporate leader in transformation work in the public and private sector, whose strength and passion is in airlines industry, served as former Executive VP of Malaysia Airlines, said “The state-owned airline's primary challenges stem from critical flight delays, unfulfilled promises of affordable travel, the complex realities of airline management.”

We learned from the media “Passengers across Sarawak & Sabah have experience cascading delays and last-minute cancellations, with some disruptions lasting up to two days. The AirBorneo cited unscheduled technical maintenance, and crew duty requirements as the core reasons for the instability. It was established with the goal of providing affordable, consistent flight options for East Malaysians. However, travelers have expressed intense disappointment over skyrocketing ticket prices during peak periods. The management has publicly acknowledged that the airline is in a ‘transition stage’ and has pleaded for public patience while they address operational bottlenecks. They realized that managing a regional airline is highly capital, labor intensive & complex.” (https://airborneo.com>operational-disruptions<) / (https://www.sarawakinc.com)

What do people expect from an airline? L-R: Dato' Amin, Sec Dzul & Prof Zul aptly responded: “One, that you fly and don't cancel. Two, that you fly on time with rigorous safety compliance.” Pix: Zul

MyAeroSatu Secretary Dzul Bahrin Asmawi, had revealed “Supply chain and MRO headaches in operating heavily strained global aviation supply chains, which causes delays in sourcing engine parts and conducting essential Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO). AirBorneo lacks the economy of scale. Competing against established carriers like AirAsia in an oversaturated budget airline sector puts further strain on its ability to offer continuous, low-cost flights without relying on heavy government subsidies. There is an urgent requirement to build local technical capability across the entire supply chain.”

MyAeroSatu resolved that “To overcome its current operational crisis, AirBorneo primarily now needs public patience, additional fleet capacity (especially jet aircraft via wet leases), enhanced local aviation technically competence managers, highly trained workforce & a dedicated ticket subsidy mechanism.”
