LET me start by saying: finally. The MyGOV Malaysia superapp is almost here, and it’s about time. For years, we’ve been juggling a digital buffet of government apps—MyJPJ, MySejahtera, MyBorderPass, MyThis, MyThat—until our phones looked like a civil service directory.

So kudos to Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo for listening to the rakyat’s cries (and my own editorial grumbles) and taking a bold step toward decluttering our digital lives.

During a Dewan Rakyat sitting on Tuesday (November 18), Gobind told MPs that the MyGOV Malaysia superapp, which uses MyDigital ID for secure digital authentication, has been designed to meet international security standards and does not store users’ personal data.

Responding to concerns raised by Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH–Tebrau) about data privacy, Gobind assured that all services integrated into the app undergo rigorous security testing, compliance checks, risk assessments, and system audits before being made available to the public.

He clarified that MyGOV Malaysia functions purely as a service-delivery platform, with no personal data retained. Integration is handled via secure APIs, ensuring that all user information remains within the respective government agencies’ systems.

Gobind noted that the app’s operations are continuously monitored to ensure compliance with national laws, including the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and the newly enacted Cybersecurity Act 2024.

Since its beta launch on August 16, the app has recorded over 113,000 downloads. In its first phase, MyGOV Malaysia offers access to 36 services from 13 government agencies, including the Road Transport Department (JPJ), Immigration Department, National Registration Department (NRD), Social Welfare Department, and MySejahtera.

But before we pop the champagne and declare victory, let’s be clear: launching the app is only half the battle. The other half? Making sure it actually reaches Malaysians from all walks of life.

Promotion must be aggressive, not passive. We need incentives that make people say, “Eh, I better download this now.” Think discounts on government services, rebates for payments made via the app, and—here’s a crowd-pleaser— concessions for public transport. Imagine getting a cheaper RapidKL fare just by flashing the app. Now that’s a digital transformation people will queue up for.

Of course, none of this works if your internet connection is slower than a Sunday morning. The government agencies involved must work closely with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to ensure stable, reliable connectivity across the country.

And while we’re on the subject, let’s talk about the MCMC Nexus app — a nifty tool that measures internet performance across 4G, 5G, and Wi-Fi networks. It’s integrated with the JENDELA Map and provides real-time feedback to service providers and regulators. Why not incorporate Nexus into the superapp? That way, users can report poor connectivity directly, and agencies can respond faster than you can say “buffering”.

Once the superapp is stabilised, let’s think bigger. Why not include town, city, and district council functions? Parking payments, business licences, dog permits—whatever local councils offer, put it in the app. No more hunting down obscure websites or downloading yet another municipal app that hasn’t been updated since 2017.

And let’s not forget accessibility. The app must be multilingual, intuitive, and compatible with older devices. If it’s only usable on the latest RM4,000 phone, we’ve missed the point entirely.

So yes, Gobind deserves a pat on the back—not just for launching the app, but for finally heeding the calls of many Malaysians to streamline our digital interactions with the government. Now, let’s make sure this superapp doesn’t become just another super-forgotten icon on our phones. - November 18, 2025
