You see, smartphone launches in the eyes of the media people like us are pretty standard affair. Set up an event, have a keynote presented to the audience, announce prices, and that’s about it. For its realme C85 series launch however, the company decided to casually take home a Guinness World Record while they’re at it, and we suppose the only justification for it is “why not”.

Specifically, the C85 series consists of two models – the realme C85 5G, and the realme C85 4G, the latter of which is for those willing to trade 5G capability for a cheaper price tag, with mostly identical specs otherwise. So which world record did this phone achieve exactly? According to realme, it’s “Most People Performing a Mobile Phone Water-Resistance Test Simultaneously.” 280 of them, to be precise, and the attempt was made in Jakarta last month.
The whole record-breaking effort involved said number of people dunking the realme C85 for precisely two minutes, so admittedly this record holds little relevance to the smartphone’s actual ingress protection capabilities, which includes up to a claimed 30 minutes of submersion at 6 meters of depth, or a whopping 60 days on a shallow 0.5-meter liquid. The so-called “IP69 Pro” protection (which supposedly extends its capabilities beyond IP69K to warrant such branding) is also claimed to protect against 36 types of liquids that include rainwater, beverages, cleaning agents, petrol, and more.
Other durability-related claims includes MIL-STD-810H compliance, with its ArmorShell chassis structure capable of withstanding 25kg of pressure before bending, along with protection against 14,000 “micro-drops”, plus some 320 other tests, the nature of which isn’t further specified. realme also claims the smartphone can retain “90% smoothness” even in ambient temperatures of 35°C, the kind of heat that Malaysians know perhaps all too well.
Specs-wise, the realme C85 series features a 7000mAh battery with 45W fast charging and reverse wired charging support, while the chipset is the main differentiating point between the two variants. The 5G model uses the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chipset, while the 4G model uses the Snapdragon 685 platform for markets without 5G access. Camera is seemingly another aspect where parts slightly differ, of which the 5G models features a 50MP Sony IMX852 main sensor, whereas the 4G models has an unspecified 50MP model.
For availability, the realme C85 5G with 8GB+256GB is priced at RM1,099, while the realme C85 4G with the same memory configuration is priced at RM749. Both are available in Parrot Purple color, while other color options include Peacock Green for the 5G model, or Swan Black and Kingfisher Blue for the 4G model.
