Samsung just announced the new Galaxy Z Fold7 and with it, comes a bunch of major changes to the book-style foldable phone that so many people love. Samsung is indeed listening to the user’s feedback – and I have to say, I’m very eager to switch over to the new Z Fold7.

Now, even though all of the teasers say that it’s an “Ultra” phone, it’s actually going to be called just the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, but Samsung claims that everything else is “ultra”.

Let’s talk about the colors first as I think the choices this year is quite good. We have it in the Blue Shadow, Jet Black, Silver Shadow, and also the online-exclusive Mint color which was not shown during our hands-on session. Personally, if the mint color has a nice hue, I would get that. Otherwise, the Blue Shadow will be my pick.

The physical dimensions got a big change this time around. It’s 8.90mm when folded and only 4.2mm when unfolded. It’s superbly thin and barely thicker than the USB-C port. That measurement is discounting the camera bump, of course.

Its weight has been cut down to only 215 grams, even lighter than the S25 Ultra.

Since many people asked for the Z Fold phones to be wider, Samsung took heed and made the Z Fold7 to be 64.9mm wide when folded. Samsung claims that this will enable a better typing expeirence with the virtual keyboard but I’m not really concerned with it since I use swipe typing anyway. I can still reach to the ends of the screen, so I guess that’s not really that wide? Or at least I have huge hands.

The hinge has gotten an overhaul too. It’s now a lot smaller than before, and it’s called the Armor FlexHinge. The inner screen now bends in a water droplet design with its multi-rail hinge structure, and the display is strengthened by a Grade 4 Titanium Lattice underneath.

The ultra-thin glass, on the contrary, got 50% thicker and has a new adhesive material to stick on the display.

When unfolded, the new Galaxy Z Fold7 will have an 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. It’s 11% larger than the Z Fold6. But there are two catches. Firstly, the under-display camera has been removed, so there’s a permanent black hole on the unfolded display.

The second catch is that the Z Fold7 will have no S Pen support at all. Zero. None. Zilch. I believe that these two things had to go so that the Z Fold7 can be as thin as it is now.

A bit of specs here – the Galaxy Z Fold7 is using the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy chipset – and we’ll definitely do a gaming test on this even though I think it’ll be very similar to another thin foldable device that we reviewed a few months ago.

The battery capacity and charging speeds are the same as before – so 4,400mAh battery and 25W of charging. The numbers here don’t really matte much and the real-world tests will make sense of it.

Now, the “ultra” cameras. I have to say, the camera bump is quite thick but at least it is parked at the side and doesn’t have a big circle at the back. This Galaxy Z Fold7 is the first foldable phone to use a 200MP main camera sensor, and the 12MP ultrawide angle camera now has an autofocusing lens. Disappointingly, the 10MP telephoto camera remains the same.

The selfie cameras on both the inner and outer display actually got an upgrade, too. They’re both using 10MP sensors with 100° wide angle, which is 15° wider than before.

Its post-processing capability got an upgrade too as it now uses a next-gen ProVisual Engine with advanced noise removal, so I presume better night shots, and has support for 10-bit HDR videos.

As for the software side of things, the Galaxy Z Fold7 will come shipped with One UI 8. There will be more new AI experience with Google’s Gemini, and also a better UI for larger displays. Circle To Search also gets an upgrade to be invoked in a game to perform a search to find guides and stuff.

Of course, the Galaxy Z Fold7 will be getting 7 generations of Android OS support and also 7 years of security updates.

And that is all that we have to share with the Galaxy Z Fold7 as of now. We will have our full review coming when we have our hands on it, and do check out other devices that were announced during this Unpacked too.
