- A non-invasive, at-home urine test named GALEAS Bladder can detect more than nine in 10 bladder cancer cases, according to a new study published in European Urology Oncology.
- Trialled on 964 patients across seven NHS urology departments, the test successfully identified 92.2 per cent of cancers by screening urine for over 450 DNA mutations across 23 genes.
- The diagnostic tool could spare thousands of individuals from undergoing an invasive cystoscopy, potentially reducing urgent cystoscopy procedures by 730 per 1,000 patients.
- Researchers from the University of Birmingham and Nonacus emphasised that the test will help clinicians prioritise high-risk patients and reduce pressure on NHS urology services.
- The GALEAS Bladder test is already being utilised within NHS diagnostic pathways across England and Wales.
