I am delighted to learn that trusted friend and colleague in the Executive Committee of MYAEROSATU, Adi Satria Ahmad, has been appointed as Datuk Pangulu (Chieftain) of Nagari Barulak (in Dutch spelt as Broeluck) in Minangkabau, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The conferment ceremony as Pangulu was bestowed him with the title DATO BIJAYO at the King's Palace of Pagaruyung, attended by local dignitaries including the Governor of West Sumatra.

In our conversations, Dato Bijayo briefed me that “The task of a chieftain is entrusted with safeguarding the inheritance of my tribe's family, the Kutianyir Tribe. In the matrilinear system of Pepatih Custom, all inheritance of the property fully owned by female and it is based on traditional cultural system of ‘niniek mamak’ or maternal grandmother who's in power while the ‘mamak’ or maternal uncle of the tribe is responsible for maintaining the family rights.”

Dato Bijayo added that “This Pepatih customary system and tradition guarantees the sustainability of the female inheritance throughout the lineage from ancient time until today & the future. No sale or purchase of property can be made without CONSENT & agreement of our entire surviving tribal family.”

I understand the ‘Olek Gadang Batogak Pangulu’ is based on Islamic "Syariah-compliant" for the sake of justice in property and the wellbeing of mothers. Adherence to Shariah-compliant practices or also known as halal transaction is based on the principles of Islam and according to the Islamic Shariah law. (https://www.europeanproceedings.com)

Originated by Dato Pepatih Nan Sebatang in Sumatra, “The uniqueness of Adat Pepatih lies primarily in its matrilineal (kinship, descent & inheritance that are traced exclusively through the female lineage system and grassroots democracy, which sets Nagari Barulak, apart from the normal patriarchal system practiced in the rest of Sumatra. It functions as a highly progressive, community-centered, governance, economic protection for women, and legal system.”
