Hawkers have been integral to Malaysia's socio-economic landscape since pre-independence. It provides essential goods & services to rural and urban communities. Historically, hawkers emerged as low-capital and self-employment opportunities for individuals with limited formal skills, thriving amidst economic fluctuations. Over time, they have adapted to urbanisation employment & livelihoods, offering accessible goods while preserving cultural traditions for economic development and growth in Malaysia. Born in a kampung environment and growing up in a small town, I'm used to eating Malaysia's food served at various stalls set up by the roadside, inhawker centres and in street-side coffee shops. Feeding and slaking the thrist of the nation is a round-the-clock affairs: Malaysians, as a rule, live to eat and not the other way round. With such low prices, who'd be bothered to cook, and as most hawkers specialise in only a few dishes, they have perfected their culinary skills to a degree where most people would prefer to eat out than in.

Last weekend, my wife, Zarina & I joined the families of my sister-in-law, Datin Hajah Salma Ishak, and my brother-in-law, Haji Abdul Aziz Ishak to dine out at their popular neighbourhood outdoor eating centre at the Boom City SS 17 Subang Jaya. It was a real great adventure and we had a lot of fun mingling around in choosing varities of local food with buskers providing evergreen entertainment.

I met friendly Abang Lan, Boom City Space Manager appointed by Subang Jaya Municipality and double-up as one of the enterprising stalls owner who move around greeting every customers. He said "Basic tables and stools are provided on-site. Hawkers will often ask if you want to makan - ‘eat there’, or bungkus - ‘take-away’. Most chefs show off their talents & skills at the front of their stalls."

Abang Lan added, “Hawker stalls are concentrated in high-density urban areas, driven by economic activity, population demand, and government support. This business not only meets urban food needs but also provides livelihoods and employment opportunities.”
