A restaurant in Sabah recently went viral after charging a customer RM50 for a piece of squid, making the total price of one plate of rice RM75.

The restaurant owner broke the silence to apologise for the inconvenience caused, but at the same time, he had some explanations to make too.

“Price is always displayed, and you’re not obligated to pay if it’s too much”

In his viral FB post, the owner explained that price tags are always displayed, and the squid, is priced between RM20 to RM100, depending on the sizes in which some of them could only be obtained through special orders.

“A kilogram of raw sweet squid is RM38, and a kilogram only has 2 to 3 of the seafood. RM38 is NOT inclusive of other cooking ingredients, rental, employees’ salaries and others.”

The owner added that he has never forced customers to pay beyond their means because the price tags are always displayed. “We have a lot more options for the customers to choose.”

Although he has faced many challenges throughout his 30 years of running the business, he is thankful to the customers who have continuously supported him and the business.

Soon after the RM50 squid went viral, the officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDNKK) paid a visit to the premise to observe the matter.

Now that the owner has explained from his side, do you think the price of the squid is justifiable?
