Prepare for a scenic overland journey between two of Southeast Asia’s major capitals. Malaysia and Thailand plan to revive the direct cross-border train service connecting KL and Bangkok. This initiative aims to utilise the existing railway infrastructure linking Kuala Lumpur, Butterworth, the border station at Padang Besar, and Bangkok.

The collaboration between Malaysia’s Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) and the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is expected to proceed quickly, leveraging the tracks already in place. This eliminates the need for complex new construction and promises travellers a comfortable, direct alternative to air travel, replacing current routes that require transfers. Currently, train services from Thailand terminate at the Padang Besar station in Songkla, a shared border facility, following SRT’s discontinuation of the direct Bangkok-Butterworth service in 2016.

Officials from KTM and SRT are focusing on coordinating operations, developing joint marketing strategies, and creating a seamless ticketing system. A target of three months has been set to finalise solutions and prepare for the service’s relaunch. The renewed connection will boost tourism and trade between the neighbouring countries.

Beyond the KL-Bangkok route: Proposed extensions, cargo services, and more

Thai authorities have proposed extending rail services from Sungai Golok to Rantau Panjang and Pasir Mas in Malaysia to boost travel and support the local economy. However, the revival of this railway connection may take time due to the non-operational status of the long-dormant railway lines in both Rantau Panjang and Sungai Golok. Also, Malaysia plans to initiate a direct rail cargo service between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok to enhance bilateral and regional trade. This Kuala Lumpur-Bangkok rail link is also expected to improve connectivity to other Asian countries, including China, Laos, and Central Asia.
