Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad revealed the reason why Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim did not become Prime Minister earlier, that is after Pakatan Harapan (PH) won the 14th General Election (GE14), while he had promised to give way to the PKR President.
Dr Mahathir was appointed as the seventh Prime Minister after the party he led, Bersatu together with PH led by Anwar succeeded in overthrowing Barisan Nasional (BN) in 2018.
He said that he had already promised to give up the post of Prime Minister to Anwar during PH's administration as a federal government.
"I made a promise and I will keep it. When I was with DAP, Parti Amanah Negara (AMANAH) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), they chose me to be the Prime Minister candidate.
He said, "But they also decided that I should become Prime Minister to give Anwar a chance to become Prime Minister and I accept that," during a recent broadcast of the Keluar Sekejap podcast, which was co-hosted by former UMNO Youth Leader Khairy Jamaluddin and former UMNO Information Chief Shahril Hamdan.

"I recognized then that PH would lose because Bersatu and Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali would bring PH to its knees. Anwar won't be prime minister if I nominate him to be one," he declared.
In February 2020, Dr. Mahathir resigned as prime minister, and 11 PKR members of parliament as well as Bersatu, led by its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, departed the PH coalition.
