Sleep constitutes a crucial element of human life. The importance of sleep cannot be overstated, as it is essential for both physical and mental health. If sleep is disturbed, it can significantly impact our overall well-being and quality of life. Approximately 10% of people worldwide have insomnia that meets the criteria for a medical disorder. Insomnia is generally not life-threatening, and there are numerous treatment options, such as medications and mental health interventions, available.

Sleep expert Rachel Salas, M.D., from Johns Hopkins states that while experts may have varying definitions of insomnia, the fundamental concept remains consistent. If insomnia persists for at least three nights per week and continues for a minimum of one month, it could be categorized as persistent insomnia disorder. This not only disturbs sleep but also affects mental and physical well-being, diminishing the capacity to function effectively during the day.

Insomnia can be categorized in two main ways by experts: Insomnia is divided into acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term) forms, with the chronic form being referred to as insomnia disorder. Insomnia can also be categorized by cause: Primary insomnia occurs independently, while secondary insomnia is a symptom of another condition or circumstance.

Sleep issues can impact people regardless of their age or gender. For example, parasomnias cause children to wake up during the night, and for students they may experience sleep deprivation because of late-night routines and early morning wake-up schedules. Seniors are at a heightened risk of experiencing insomnia, which is characterized by difficulties in falling asleep or disrupted and restless sleep, resulting in daytime sleepiness and a lack of feeling refreshed. Additionally, the increasing prevalence of age-related health conditions raises the likelihood of developing sleep apnea. This condition, which affects as many as 1 in 5 seniors today, not only impacts their health but also has implications for their families.

There are three significant sings that will detect that you don't get enough sleep which Known as fatigue dozing off during the day and mood changes. Experiencing one or all these symptoms may indicate sleep deprivation, which can have long-term effects on your health. “Sleep deprivation significantly heightens the likelihood of making mistakes, particularly in individuals working shifts, those with roles involving responsibility for others' lives, or jobs demanding intense focus and concentration. The potential negative impacts of sleep deprivation can range from minor to catastrophic.”

The treatment of insomnia requires a combination of behavioural and lifestyle adjustments under the guidance of a healthcare professional. This may involve collaborating with a sleep psychologist to learn relaxation techniques, address sleep-related concerns, and establish consistent sleep schedules, such as maintaining regular wake-up and bedtime hours and avoiding daytime naps. If falling asleep becomes challenging, getting out of bed and returning when feeling sleepy can help disrupt the pattern of lying awake. Exposure to bright light during the day and dimmer light in the evening can also assist in resetting the body's sleep-wake cycle. While medications are an option, they should be used carefully and preferably for short-term relief, as they can lead to side effects and dependence.
