It happened again.
On July 2, 2025, a tour bus at Genting Highlands lost control inside an open-air parking structure. The bus reportedly veered off course, slammed into the metal parking barrier, and caused part of the structure to collapse — crushing a car parked underneath. The force of the crash also shattered the windshield of the bus.
Thankfully, no fatalities were reported, but it’s hard not to feel uneasy. It’s not the first time this has happened in Genting. Just a few weeks earlier, another tour bus carrying 25 passengers skidded near KM 12 of the winding descent from the hilltop resort. Although only minor injuries were reported, the situation could have been far worse.
The road to Genting is known for its steep gradients — up to 10% incline — and sudden, sharp turns. It’s scenic, but it’s also one of the most dangerous mountain routes in Malaysia. Despite having emergency escape ramps and signage, accidents continue to happen.
Why does this keep happening?
One reason could be driver fatigue or insufficient training. Driving down a mountain requires more than just holding the wheel — it demands caution, alertness, and full control of braking systems. If a bus isn’t properly maintained or if drivers aren’t experienced with highland routes, a small error becomes a deadly mistake.
As Malaysians, we’ve seen too many Genting-related accidents over the years — from fatal crashes to vehicles toppling off the edge. Each time, we ask the same questions: Was the driver at fault? Was the vehicle safe? Could this have been prevented?
The answers vary, but the message stays the same — Genting isn’t just a tourist destination; it’s a risk zone. Until we take highland driving more seriously, we may see more “near misses” — or worse, tragedies that could have been avoided.
So next time you take a trip uphill, remember: It’s not just about the view. It’s about arriving home safely.
