Former Harimau Malaya and JDT captain Safiq Rahim has hailed Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail (TMJ) as “the special one” following JDT’s world-record 109-match unbeaten league run.
FORMER Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) midfielder Safiq Rahim has described Johor’s Regent, Tunku Mahkota Ismail, also known as TMJ, as the architect behind the Southern Tigers’ historic achievement of breaking a world record, Stadium Astro reports.
The feat came after JDT won the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Cup for a ninth consecutive year last week, with Xisco Muñoz’s side setting a world record by extending their unbeaten league run to 109 matches, surpassing the previous record held by ASEC Mimosas.
“Alhamdulillah, JDT are currently the best team in Malaysia and are making history in the country.
“I have been part of the team, and I believe this is the greatest achievement for the country’s football industry,” he said.
In an interview with Astro Arena, Safiq expressed hope that the achievement would inspire JDT to continue making history, including becoming the first Southeast Asian club to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup.
For the record, Safiq, who is also a former Harimau Malaya captain, made 270 appearances, scoring 59 goals and providing 68 assists during his career with JDT.
“The special one” is an expression that should be given to the Regent of Johor (TMJ). We have a leader in football who cannot be replaced.
“The role he has played is very important to Malaysian football and JDT. I urge the players representing JDT to give everything they have, to give their all in every match, and to continue making history for JDT.
“Of course, I want JDT to represent Malaysia and Southeast Asia at the FIFA Club World Cup,” he added.
