Social media platforms have become deeply embedded in the lives of today's youth in the modern age of technology, significantly shaping their views, behaviours and perceptions. Platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have revolutionized the way young individuals interact and connect.

In addition to its benefits, the impact of social media on youth culture has sparked debates and concerns regarding its influence on social interactions, mental health and self-confidence. When young individuals compare their lives to the seemingly flawless lives of others, they may feel compelled to present an idealized version of themselves, leading to low self-esteem and a sense of inadequacy.

The emphasis on social media places on such as likes, comments and follows has resulted in a culture of seeking validation among the youth, where online popularity is linked to self-assurance. Continuously striving for validation can have detrimental effects on mental well-being, fostering feelings of isolation, unease and depression.

The influence of social media on the cultural norms, values and well-being of young people cannot be underestimated. These platforms serve as powerful tools for conveying ideologies, trends and ideas that shape societal attitudes and behaviours. Social media possesses the ability to bring together large numbers of youth who share common interests and concerns, amplifying their voices and sparking social transformation through various means, ranging from viral challenges to impactful social movements.

The extensive utilization of social media, however, raises concerns regarding its impact on interpersonal connections and social bonds. Studies suggest that excessive engagement with social media can lead to a decrease in face-to-face interactions, as well as a decline in empathy and effective communication in real-life scenarios.

Despite these challenges, social media provides opportunities for positive engagement and personal growth. It serves as a platform for marginalized individuals to express themselves, fosters the creation of networks and communities and grants youth unparalleled access to knowledge and support.
