Sungai Kerian is a river in the northern part of the Peninsula Malaysia state of Perak. The river originates from the Bintang Range. It flows westerly and discharges into the Straits of Malacca. Uniquely, it is the meeting point for the confluence of three rivers flowing together from the States of Perak, Kedah and Penang at Taman Pinggiran Sungai Kerian. These rare confluences occur when a tributary joins a large river, where 2 rivers join a third. As such, people from 3 states can be seen fishing together downstream.
From the borderland of Parit Buntar town in Perak, we can crisscross by car within 15 minutes to enter Nibong Tebal town in Penang and Bandar Baharu town in Kedah respectively. It is just like the bird trapping of 3 legendary birds with a hexagonal net in the daily life scenes during the Old Kingdom Elite Tombs of Bujang Valley Civilisation.
Nearby Sungai Kerian at the Kedah-Penang border in Pinang Tunggal, there is a British-Siamese boundary stone dated 02 November 1831 as a historical landmark that preserved as the agreement under "Treaty Kedah Knox's Anglo-Siamese" between British Governor and the then King of Siam, Somdet Phra Phootthee Chow Ya Hoa. It is now a tourist attraction since recently Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Sanusi Md Nor had been making strong claims that Penang is under the 'ownership' of Kedah. However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that Penang's status as a state separated from Kedah had been resolved before Malaysia secured its independence.
Another landmark at the borderland is Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Engineering Faculty campus at Jalan Transkrian in Nibong Tebal. It is a very special area, about 320 acres at the borders of Penang, Perak and Kedah. The campus is about 4 km from Nibong Tebal, 4 km from Parit Buntar, Perak and 8.3 km from Bandar Baharu, Kedah. The university has produced more than 50,000 engineers since 1986. It is branded not as an exclusive Ivory Tower that is far from the reach of the local community.
