Family offers a sense of security of having someone with whom we can discuss our thoughts and celebrate our happiness. Family is the most important part of anyone's life. In short, family is our whole world. The International Day of Families is commemorated annually on May 15 to highlight the importance of families in society. The theme for this year celebration is ‘Families and Climate Change’ which aims to raise awareness on how climate change affects families, and their role in climate action. (www.un.org)

The realistic goal is to increase awareness regarding the effects of climate change on families and encourage them to take action to mitigate these impacts. The families and community initiatives play a vital role in climate action by providing education, information access, training, and community participation. Empowering families is crucial for meaningful and effective climate change. By instilling sustainable habits and climate awareness in families, we can drive the transition to a sejahtera (well-being) economy.

Sejahtera Leadership Initiatives (SLI) and Global Sejahtera, fully support this International Day of Families which aims to promote full awareness of family issues, increase knowledge of the social, cultural, economic, and demographic processes affecting families, and celebrate all types of families success while acknowledging their diversity and promoting inclusivity. It is also an opportunity to emphasise the importance of maintaining strong relationships with relatives, both individual families and society as a whole.

I learned from the various SLI Dialogues that climate change negatively impacts the health and well-being of families through increased pollution, while extreme weather events exacerbated by climate change, such as heavy rains, floods, and droughts, often lead to forced displacement and loss of livelihoods for families and individuals. Such disasters impact agriculture, fisheries, industry productivity and access to water, intensifying hunger and vulnerability. They caused economic and community disruption.
