Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim has pushed back against criticism that Malaysia’s recently signed Reciprocal Trade Agreement (RTA) with the United States compromises national sovereignty, insisting that the deal is not a surrender of power but a pragmatic move to ensure Malaysia’s continued competitiveness in global trade.
Addressing Parliament, Anwar reminded critics that Malaysia retains full control over its participation. “There’s an exit clause in this trade agreement. All trade agreements have exit clauses,” he stressed, rebutting opposition claims that the pact amounted to “economic colonialism.” He further explained that the agreement underwent detailed scrutiny by senior officials to safeguard national interests before its signing with US President Donald Trump during his official visit to Malaysia.
The prime minister defended the deal as a necessary step to attract investment and preserve Malaysia’s trade edge, especially as regional economies intensify competition for US markets. “Turning half-truths into absolutes is a problem,” he said. “Some people simply refuse to acknowledge anything good.”
Under the RTA, Malaysia will extend preferential market access for US industrial and agricultural exports - including machinery, metals, dairy, and rice - while the US reciprocates with a 19% tariff rate on Malaysian goods, a reduction from the earlier 25% imposed under unilateral trade measures. Certain key Malaysian exports, such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, cocoa, and aircraft components, will benefit from zero-tariff exemptions.
Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Dato’ Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz reinforced Anwar’s remarks, describing the deal as “the best-case scenario” achieved under intense negotiation pressure. He said Malaysia had no choice but to defend its access to the US market, emphasizing that without this agreement, the country could have faced tariffs as high as 40% or even 100%. If that were to happen, he warned, it would not be the government that suffers - but Malaysian workers and exporters who would lose jobs and income.
Tengku Zafrul dismissed allegations that the pact forced Malaysia to adopt Washington’s sanctions or trade restrictions on other nations. He clarified that Article 5.1 of the agreement only requires consultation with the US on shared economic or security issues, calling it a “guardrail” rather than a “blank cheque” for American demands.
On concerns about Malaysia’s halal standards or energy sovereignty, the minister was unequivocal. “Halal certification remains the sole authority of Jakim - full stop,” he asserted. He also clarified that Petronas’ decision to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US was a purely commercial move to ensure long-term energy security, not a political concession.
Tengku Zafrul emphasized that Malaysia’s rare earth export ban remains intact, with all partnerships requiring domestic processing to generate high-skilled jobs. “This is not dependency; this is diversification,” he said, highlighting Malaysia’s strategy to strengthen ties with nations such as South Korea, the UAE, and those in the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement (APTA).
As both leaders reiterated, the US-Malaysia trade deal is not about submission but survival - ensuring Malaysia’s economy remains resilient amid a volatile global landscape. Anwar summed it up best with a quip in Parliament: “Who do they want me to side with then? Which country? Only Kedah and Kelantan? I’m on good terms with them too.”
In essence, the deal signals Malaysia’s delicate yet confident stance: striking a middle ground where economic opportunity and national interests coexist, ensuring certainty in an unpredictable world and paving the way for continued economic advancement.
