Hong Kong is slowly becoming a K-food haven, and we’re all for it. Last year saw a wave of Korean restaurants and franchises setting up shop in our city. This year is no different, as more brands look to open international outposts here. This time, Korean spicy stir-fried octopus specialist Obongzip is making its mark in Hong Kong, following the viral success of its Singaporean branch.

The franchise will be opening its first Hong Kong outpost in Tsim Sha Tsui, joining other popular Korean restaurants. Currently, there is no official opening date. However, we do know that the restaurant will take up residence on Cameron Road, inside Cameron Plaza. Stay tuned for more details on the opening.

What to expect from Obongzip Hong Kong

The restaurant prides itself on its nakji bokkeum, or stir-fried octopus. It’s a spicy and fiery dish, where the marinated octopus is stir-fried with fresh vegetables. It’s a perfect dish to enjoy with some rice. Obongzip is also known for its bossam, a beloved dish featuring sliced boiled pork belly, enjoyed in a vegetable wrap with spicy preserved radish. The makguksu, or buckwheat noodles, is also a popular item that’s spicy and refreshing. In Korea, the menu also includes soups and stews.

The Singaporean outpost also has another claim to virality: the giant grilled tteok, also known as the giant mochi pillow. The rice cake is grilled until it puffs up, then covered in injeolmi or roasted soybean powder. When cut into pieces and pulled apart, you get a truly Instagram-worthy mochi pull. This menu is currently exclusive to Singapore, but here’s to hoping they’ll bring it to Obongzip Hong Kong too.
