Netizens predict delivery, tech support, and e-commerce growth as Malaysia’s WFH era begins for civil servants and GLC staff
AS a new era of working from home (WFH) begins for civil servants and GLC employees on April 15, a spirited debate has emerged regarding which business sectors are poised to thrive in this shifting landscape.
The discussion was triggered by Threads user @yaya_kamarulzaman, who posed a simple yet provocative question: “What businesses do you think will thrive after this?”
Several commenters identified food services and home-office support as the primary beneficiaries.
User @simplylifesarah suggested that healthy meal deliveries, half-day childcare, and home-office equipment—such as second monitors and ergonomic furniture—would see a significant surge in demand.
Technical support is also expected to be a high-growth area. User @bibyleee noted that installation and fibre-optic technicians will likely be “the busiest,” as more households become dependent on high-speed Wi-Fi for professional stability.
Reflecting on the Movement Control Order (MCO) era, user @kakita1931 recalled that while home-based dessert and cake businesses were lucrative during Covid-19, the current economic climate is different.
“Uncertainty means spending is now tighter,” the user said, suggesting that while demand may exist, disposable income has decreased compared to 2020.
Delivery and logistics platforms remained a recurring theme. Netizens highlighted Grab, FoodPanda, ShopeeFood, and J&T as essential services, while others suggested that independent “runner” services could see a localized boost.
Unexpected opportunities also emerged during the debate. @shuhadarosli_ suggested “clothes folding services,” while @araya.merican recommended focusing on “gaming chairs” for long-term comfort.
Meanwhile, @k.fatehfarel observed that “live-selling of women’s products” remains a dominant and growing trend.
Pet ownership also saw a mention, with @surpbouquet observing a “boom in cat purchases” as those staying at home seek companionship—a phenomenon often attributed to “FOMO” (fear of missing out).
Even essential services were not overlooked. User @zuanmohd_89 pointed out a practical reality: “Garbage truck services. There will be more trash generated when people stay at home.”
This was echoed by @junaliew_, who said that Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) would see consistent growth as household consumption increases.
