Ryan Coogler is bringing The X-Files back to television with a new take on the iconic sci-fi franchise. The reboot has officially been picked up as a series by Hulu, marking a major milestone for the long-gestating project. Here’s everything we know about The X-Files reboot, including its plot and cast details.
Originally created by Chris Carter, The X-Files became a defining television series of the 1990s, following FBI agents investigating cases involving paranormal activity and unexplained phenomena. Ryan Coogler, the filmmaker behind Black Panther and Sinners, wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot. He will continue as an executive producer on the series, with Jennifer Yale serving as showrunner. Coogler’s reimagining will introduce a new pair of investigators while returning to the mysterious world that made the original a pop culture favourite.

The new The X-Files is a reimagining of Chris Carter’s classic science-fiction drama. According to the official logline, the series follows two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond after being assigned to a long-shuttered division dedicated to cases involving unexplained phenomena.
The premise retains the original series’ central fascination with mysterious events and the supernatural while introducing a new investigative team. The contrasting personalities of the two agents are also expected to play a key role as they navigate cases that challenge conventional explanations.
Unlike a direct continuation of the original characters’ stories, the reboot is expected to feature new characters rather than bringing back Dana Scully and Fox Mulder in the lead roles.
Who is in the cast of the reboot?
Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel lead the cast of The X-Files reboot.
Deadwyler is known for her performances in The Harder They Fall, Till and The Piano Lesson. Patel has appeared in Yesterday, Station Eleven and The Odyssey. The two actors previously worked together on the HBO series Station Eleven, and they will reunite for this new sci-fi project.
Both actors will play FBI agents tasked with investigating unexplained phenomena. Their characters’ names and further details about the supporting cast have not yet been announced.
How is the new series connected to the original The X-Files?
The reboot draws from the world created by Carter, whose original series premiered on Fox in 1993. It starred Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully and David Duchovny as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, two investigators who explored paranormal cases and conspiracies.
The original show ran for nine seasons before returning for a revival that aired for two additional seasons. Its popularity also led to two feature films: The X-Files, released in 1998, and The X-Files: I Want to Believe, released in 2008.
Coogler’s version will revisit the franchise’s central theme of unexplained phenomena. Further details about possible connections to the original characters or storylines have not been confirmed.
Is there a release date for The X-Files reboot?
Hulu has officially ordered The X-Files reboot as a series, but it has not announced a premiere date yet. The streaming service has also not confirmed the episode count or a release window for the sci-fi drama.
