It’s been another great year for geeks and nerds. Despite 2026 being just around the corner, we’re still being fed thanks to all the new game trailers and that kick ass Street Fighter reveal from The Game Awards. But before we close the chapter on this year, let’s take a look back and review what happened in the world of geek in 2025.

Superman, Clair Obscur, and up in the sky: Here’s the Year in Geek 2025
Superman, the DCU’s first film, was released
The DCU kicked off with Creature Commandos, the animated series on HBO Max, back in December of last year. But Superman was Gunn and Co.’s first big screen production in the new comic book universe—and it was a massive hit. Many praised David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman, the insane chemistry between him and Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, the lovable yet chaotic Krypto, and making Superman feel hopeful, fun, and like a Boy Scout again. Finally, it reminded us that kindness is the true punk rock.
TikTok went dark in the U.S.—for less than a day

The day that everyone was dreading of finally came true. Well, everyone in the U.S., that is. After weeks of “will it, won’t it” that made it feel like Ross and Rachel all over again, TikTok was taken down in America. Users couldn’t access the app, and many migrated to another Chinese app called Red Note. But not less than a day later, TikTok returned, much to the relief of influencers, lipsyncers, and ragebaiters in the good ol’ U.S. of A.
The Fifteenth Doctor regenerated
Every Whovian knows that regeneration is inevitable. Each Doctor will eventually pass the keys of the TARDIS to the next one. But when it does happen, it’s usually announced well beforehand, which was why Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerating unceremoniously caught so many off guard. With only two seasons under his belt, people were shocked that Gatwa was leaving the show so early and all of a sudden. Not only that, Fifteen also regenerated into Billie Piper’s Rose Tyler (or at least someone who looked like her), leaving fans scratching their heads. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait another year to get answers.
First glimpse of Robert Downey Jr. as Doom

When it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. was going to be playing Doom, the internet was ecstatic. Though fans knew he wasn’t going to be facing off against Marvel’s first family in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, they were hopeful that he’d at least appear briefly. Sure enough, the post-credits scene gave the shortest of glimpses of the Marvel veteran in his Doom garb.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 swept The Game Awards
People have been raving about this game for a while, and almost everyone was unanimous in predicting it would win Game of the Year. Not only did that come true but it also won eight other awards, making this year’s awards the year of Clair Obscur. A well-deserved honour, of course.
Markiplier’s Iron Lung finally gets a release date
Nerds and geeks love Markiplier. We’ve been watching him and his shenanigans with besties Bob and Wade for years. But he’s also been working on a passion project that is finally going to be released next year. That’s not all: it’s also getting a pretty wide release in the U.S. even though it’s being self-distributed by Markiplier, which is no small feat. The popular streamer’s video talking about the film with tears streaming down his face is just heartwarming.
Chris Evans is reportedly returning for Avengers: Doomsday

Well, we got major MCU news before the year ends. If rumours are to be believed, it’s not only RDJ who’s making a comeback to the universe but also Chris Evans. That would explain his jacked physique a few months ago while doing press for Materialists, something the internet suspected. What exactly will the actor’s role be in the new movie? No one knows… Well, the supposed leaked trailer may give it away.
