TAWAU: Police here arrested a foreigner less than 24 hours after he was suspected to have stolen valuables from a vehicle whose owner was performing Friday prayers at the Bombalai Mosque.

Tawau District Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said the suspect, in his 20s, was arrested by a Bombalai team at the Kg Melati area, in Burut, at 9.05pm.

He said the suspect tried to flee when approached but was arrested after a scuffle.

Jasmin added that the suspect was taken to the Tawau District Police Headquarters for further action and the case was investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Earlier, the police received a report by the victim at 12.40pm.

The victim found his mobile phone in the vehicle along with cash missing, with losses estimated at RM1,000.
