With National Day just around the corner, you’ll be starting to see Merdeka-themed banners and billboards all around town. And with AI on the rise, you’ll notice that many of these banners and billboards might have been generated by AI.

One Malaysian man noticed an AI-generated National Day billboard in Desa Sri Hartamas and realised that there was something very wrong with it.

Adib Mazlee took to his Facebook page to call out the Brickfields Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) National Day billboard that featured 3 KLCC towers! The 3rd tower appears to be an odd-looking step-sibling that’s nevertheless linked to the original 2 by a bridge.

He wrote, “The Merdeka month is the time to show our patriotic spirit. There should be effort put in because this month commemorates independence, it is a historic month.”

“If even your poster is made using AI, there are 3 KLCC towers, are you really so lazy to just take a picture from Google as long as it’s an original photo? There’s also Shutterstock, Freepik and even Pexels, with many nice pictures that are free to use. This is an official poster by a PDRM branch, you’re an official uniformed agency.”

The image has been taken down

IPD Brickfields has since ordered the media agency in charge of the billboard to have it taken down, and the media agency has since apologised for the error in the billboard.

“The post in regards to the Independence Day greetings that has gone viral on social media is a display from a digital billboard in Desa Sri Hartamas. IPD Brickfields has advised the owner of the advertising company to take down the advertisement immediately,” IPD Brickfields wrote.
