Tis’ the season to talk about things that go bump at night...We Malaysians are mostly a superstitious bunch, with various hantu like the haunting Pontianak and creepy Pocong, it’s no wonder we can’t resist a good ghost story!
Our country is not short of it’s spooky, spine-tingling tales and we decided to round up some popular hotels across Malaysia that have a notorious reputation of housing some disturbed spirits…
Continue reading and uncover the mysteriously eerie experiences guests have encountered at these hotels… if you dare!
1.First World Hotel, Genting Highland
With a staggering 7,351 rooms, the First World Hotel has been the world’s largest hotel (since 2015 due to it’s huge room count).
However, this colossal structure hides a sinister reputation. Most chilling is the eerie connection between the hotel and unlucky gamblers who have met their untimely end due to alleged suicides. Apparitions have been spotted leaping from cliffs and vanishing into thin air. Ghostly figures roam the corridors and even float outside windows. All 21 floors of this massive hotel are said to be “haunted”.
No one dares to occupy certain rooms, as an ominous illness seems to befall those who do. The lingering scent of incense in select areas fuels the belief that spirits are present, in accordance with Chinese beliefs… Some rooms remain perpetually empty, and guests are not allowed to enter due to alleged horrific hauntings…
Location: Genting Highlands, 69000 Genting Highlands, Pahang
2. Copthorne Hotel, Cameron Highland
It is believed that mountains are also where the veil between our dimension and the spirit realm is the thinnest..
So it’s not surprising that places like Cameron’s chilly mountain tops have been said to be “active” with paranormal activities. Although no allegations of these horrors have been confirmed and the government has issued statements that such “rumors” bring bad business, we think one can never be too careful (or too curious if you decide to go down the dark tourism route and have a ghost haunting adventure!)
Just this year, a mother and her family were affected by an unknown entity at the Copthorne Hotel. The mom woke up in shock when her son had a bruise after spending the night in the eerie hotel room. Their helper also complained that she heard many footsteps at 3am and could not sleep till morning due to fear. Other reviews of the hotel have also mentioned supernatural encounters at this hotel… Would you dare stay here?
Location: Brinchang, 39100 Brinchang, Pahang
3. Corus Paradise Resort, Port Dickson
With 200 rooms and a beautiful view of the beach, the Corus Paradise Resort appears inviting at first glance. Yet, as guests cross the threshold, a disconcerting atmosphere prevails.
Mysterious odors linger in the air, and an eerie aura envelops the place. Odd watermarks on the walls hint at a past submerged underwater, giving the building a ghostly quality.
In stark contrast, other towers stand deserted, their lights forever extinguished. The peeling paint only adds to the unsettling feeling of abandonment.
Location: Jalan Pantai, Taman Haji Zainal, 71000 Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan
4. New York Hotel, Johor Bharu
The New York Hotel in Johor holds a dark history marred by whispers of suicide cover-ups. One harrowing tale centers around the 13th floor, where a suicide led to the complete sealing of an entire room. What transpired in that room to warrant such extreme measures?
The hotel’s walls hide untold stories, and as guests check in, they may unknowingly become part of a sinister narrative that continues to unfold…
Location: 22, Jalan Dato Abdullah Tahir, Taman Abad, 80300 Johor Bahru, Johor
5. Hotel Mandarin Pacific, Kuala Lumpur
It first opened in October 1998 (during Halloween season of all times too!) and is located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Nestled in KL’s Chinatown, this looming building with 144 rooms is known to be haunted by residents of the area…
There is an eerie story of an old man who stayed at the hotel for a while but sadly he passed away alone in his hotel room (room 1102). Tragically, his dead body was not discovered until it was already decomposing…Allegedly the hotel’s hauntings started from then on, with multiple guests complaining of eerie noises at night (sounds of furniture moving, doors creaking on their own and sound of marbles bouncing).
It’s believed that there was a guest who checked into room 1102 before but immediately left after experiencing a supernatural encounter… Since then guests were banned from that room. Now, the Mandarin Pacific Hotel stands, abandoned, unsure if it’s to the lack of funds to maintain it, the hauntings or a mix of both factors.. What do you think?
Location: 2-8, Jalan Sultan, City Centre, 50000 Kuala Lumpur
6. Permaisuri Stadium Hang Jebat Hotel, Melaka
This hotel was allegedly so haunted it had to be closed down… Even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, this hotel was already getting abandoned due too it’s very “active” haunting encounters.
The Permaisuri Stadium Hang Jebat Hotel was built to house guests that were also visiting to watch matches at Melaka’s Stadium Hang Jebat (built in 2004). Unfortunately, it was not open long enough till multiple guests started complaining of odd disturbances at this secluded and huge building compound…
No particular scary story stands out but now the hotel serves as a hotspot for paranormal seekers to go ghost haunting here, with multiple videos of their horrifying encounters on YouTube and TikTok. Watch if you dare!
Location: Lot 5013 & 5014, Kompleks Sukan Hang Jebat, Paya Rumput, 76450, Malacca
And that brings us to the end of our list of eerie hotels…Would you be brave enough to visit any one of them to test the theory out? Comment below other haunted hotels that were not mentioned so we can keep this spooky conversation going, people!
We hope you sleep well tonight…and that we didn’t scare you too much!
