Food can be yummy in our tummy but certain regulations prior to consumption have to be followed. As Malaysians, it should be a well-known fact that Muslims are prohibited from consuming anything with pork.

Recently, an image of soft candy with jam in a bottle has gone viral on social media for the wrong reasons. If you take a close look at the ingredients label, it clearly states that the soft candy contains pork gelatine. However, there’s an issue with the snack.

Ironically, a Halal logo can be seen imprinted on the bottle, with the name Halal Food Council International Malaysia & Asia Region visible.

The confusion has upset many consumers who cannot include pork in their diet. Since then, they have urged the relevant organisations to look out on the matter to avoid unwanted consequences. In response to the matter, JAKIM has clarified the matter via a Facebook post.

It was revealed that the Halal logo imprinted on the product was NOT recognised by JAKIM and it is an offence under the Malaysian Trade Description Acts 2011. JAKIM has also advised fellow Muslim consumers NOT to purchase the product and always to be careful of the ingredients used in a product.

“If you happen to find the products in the market, we advise you to lodge an official complaint to JAKIM.”

This should be a reminder to fellow Muslim consumers to be vigilant of the products they purchase. If you happen to spot these items on the shelf, do help our Muslim friends by reporting them to the relevant organisations!
