Concerns over the credibility of Malaysia’s anti-corruption drive resurfaced in Parliament on January 21, 2026, after Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim highlighted what he described as troubling inconsistencies in how corruption cases are handled. Speaking during the debate on the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat, the PKR lawmaker said public confidence continues to be undermined by a widespread perception that investigations move swiftly in some cases while stalling or failing to materialise in others.

Hassan noted that while the government frequently reiterates its commitment to fighting corruption, uneven enforcement has affected how the public and the international community assess these efforts. He pointed out that this perception has also contributed to Malaysia’s lack of progress in the Corruption Perceptions Index, which reflects how corruption is viewed globally. According to him, many believe that cases involving individuals outside the ruling establishment tend to be investigated and prosecuted more quickly than those linked to people in power.

His remarks were made in response to points raised earlier by Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee, who referred to a Sabah mining exploration case in which only two individuals had been charged despite a larger number being investigated. Hassan said such examples reinforce public scepticism, especially when major figures appear to receive more lenient outcomes.

He further questioned how a comprehensive anti-corruption campaign could succeed if influential figures were perceived to be receiving reduced consequences even after court proceedings. Hassan drew attention to cases where individuals were granted discharges without acquittal or later classified under no further action decisions, stressing that such outcomes do not amount to proof of innocence in the eyes of the public.

He expressed sympathy for officers of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, noting that their investigative work risks being devalued when cases fail to progress or conclude with outcomes perceived as preferential.
