Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has refuted claims of any coercion to impede the ongoing corruption trial of Datuk Seri Najib Razak, stating that there's no interference despite Umno's presence in the unity government.

During an interview with Al Jazeera's Sami Zeidan, Anwar emphasized that Najib's corruption trial is proceeding without any hindrance, even though a faction of the unity government represents his party.

Speaking on 'Talk To Al Jazeera,' aired earlier today, Anwar addressed criticisms regarding the perceived slowdown in economic and democratic reforms since assuming office, suggesting that rectifying "decades of excesses" cannot be achieved in a short span of time.

Drawing parallels with past reform attempts in Eastern Europe, Anwar cautioned against rushing reforms that could lead to economic and political turmoil. He emphasized the significance of governance, highlighting successful measures to prevent leaders and cabinet members from misusing public funds.

Anwar underscored the government's commitment to transparency and accountability, noting efforts to curb corruption and enhance regulatory frameworks to prevent future abuses of power. He highlighted initiatives aimed at strengthening institutions and fostering a culture of integrity within the public sector.

Regarding Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) verdict, Anwar deferred to the attorney-general for an explanation. He also stressed the independence of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in pursuing investigations into alleged financial misconduct, irrespective of political affiliations.

Anwar cited instances where individuals associated with both the government and opposition were subject to MACC investigations, underscoring the need for impartiality in upholding the rule of law.

Reflecting on inherited systemic challenges, Anwar acknowledged the legacy of authoritarian control over judicial and investigative bodies. He affirmed a commitment to reforming such structures to ensure accountability and transparency in governance.

In navigating Malaysia's complex political landscape, Anwar reiterated the importance of upholding the principles of justice and impartiality, underscoring the government's resolve to address systemic issues inherited from previous administrations.
