Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has alleged that a recent assault on his 12-year-old son in Putrajaya was a calculated attempt to intimidate him into silence. Despite the incident, he has pledged to continue his political duties without yielding to threats.
The event reportedly took place around 1.45pm, as Rafizi’s wife and son were returning to their vehicle after leaving a shopping mall in Putrajaya. According to his account, a masked man suddenly approached and jabbed his son with a syringe. Subsequent checks revealed that two men on a motorcycle had been following the family’s car prior to the attack.
Rafizi suggested that the assailants had been strategically positioned and acted at what they deemed the most opportune moment. Both were described as wearing black clothing and full-face helmets, concealing their identities. He believes the attack was not random but premeditated.
Following the assault, his son was rushed to UPM Hospital for immediate medical treatment. The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) arrived at the scene shortly after and took statements from the family. Rafizi noted that official updates on the case and his son’s medical condition should come from the authorities and the hospital.
The lawmaker remarked that in all his years in politics, this was the first instance where his family had been directly targeted in such a manner. He interpreted the assault as a message intended to dissuade him from speaking on certain matters.
He expressed appreciation for the rapid response of the PDRM and the medical staff at UPM Hospital, as well as for the supportive messages he had received from the public. While acknowledging the need to strengthen personal and family security measures, he affirmed his intention to press on with his responsibilities.
Reports earlier in the day indicated that the attack occurred in the car park of a Putrajaya mall. Rafizi, who previously served as the economy minister, confirmed the details and indicated that his son remained under hospital observation while undergoing further checks.
The incident has drawn significant attention, not only for its apparent targeting of a political figure’s family member but also for the troubling implications it carries for public safety and political discourse. For Rafizi, however, the message is clear — he will not be deterred from carrying out his work.
