No one is perfect and everyone is bound to make mistakes at work, in which the experience serves as the “best teacher” that we can ever learn from. However, do you think corporate punishment is relevant today in making employees learn from their mistakes?

In a Xiao Hong Shu (RED) post by @疯狂兔子, a netizen from China recently spotted something shocking that happened just outside Haidialao Hotpot in China. 2 employees of the restaurant were seen doing ear squats (pulling your ear lobes while doing squats a.k.a. ketuk ketampi) while being watched by their superior. The netizen was NOT happy with what was happening and questioned the relevance of corporate punishments in today’s society.

“Haidilao’s employee earn quite a lot, but I don’t think they deserve this. They’re working hard enough and now they have to face this kind of embarrassment.”

The netizen also highlighted that Haidilao is not only known for its vast options of dishes but also the hospitality and the good service of the staff. She added that she has applied for a position at the restaurant but after witnessing the embarrassing corporal punishment, she was glad to dodge the bullet.

“I’m glad I didn’t go for it. Everyone works hard so why do we deserve this? Is this how the management of the place treats its employees?”

In the meantime, other netizens were also baffled to see the treatment that the employees had to endure despite their hard work. Some former staff of the organisation also spilled some tea about their experience.

“I used to work there, and I forgot to prepare the condiments. I was asked to copy a series of notes and had to submit them the next day at 9 am. I finished my shift at 10:30 pm. I was also asked to do 100 times of squats.”

“I can’t understand this culture of not treating the servers equally as other people. They’re still humans.”

“This is scary. Everyone is just there to work, why are they treating them like slaves?”

“This is sick. Do they even have the right to punish the workers like that?”

What do you think of corporal punishment, such as ear squats (AKA Ketuk Ketampi in Malay) in today’s working society? Is it important to make sure the workers learn their lesson?
