Foreign beggars are making up to RM12,000 a month at a night market in Johor.

In an official statement by The Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM) in Johor, the authorities detained 4 foreign nationals during Ops Kutip and Ops Jaja at the night market in Taman Nusa Perintis, Gelang Patah on October 30 (Thursday).

The Director of JIM Johor, Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus, stated that the operation took place from 6:20 PM to 7:20 PM. Those detained included two Thai men, one Cambodian man, and one Pakistani man.

Rusdi said the beggars have been using the night market for more than 3 months now.

“We took action after getting public complaints regarding the activities and presence of foreign beggars and charity collectors in the area.”

Rusdi added that some of the beggars have disabilities and will use the excuse of raising funds for Tahfiz schools or religious organizations to get sympathy. The strategic location and the compassionate attitude of Malaysians towards these individuals are part of how these beggars find a comfortable location.

“They are abusing social visit passes and could earn up to RM400 a day or RM12,000 a month.”

To those in other states, have you spotted any foreign beggars?
