“It takes one pack of curry puff to help me survive“. These are the words on a piece of carboard paper placed at a makeshift curry puff stall in Damansara Uptown.
The owner of the stall is Aunty Joyce, a 68-year-old elderly woman with mild Alzheimer’s trying to make an honest living with the help of her cousin.
The cardboard notice had been placed there by a kind customer who wished to help improve Aunty Joyce’s business.
At first, the notice helped boost sales, but this flatlined after a while until Vanessa Leong, a kind passerby helped make Aunty Joyce’s business go viral.
Since being shared on Monday, Vanessa’s post promoting Aunty Joyce’s business has gained thousands of likes and shares.
“RM5 may not be a lot to us but it means a lot to her. Instead of getting that cup of Starbucks coffee, we can get 4 curry puffs from her!” she said in her post, encouraging everyone to support local businesses.
The online attention has also translated to a tremendous increase in sales, with the curry puffs selling out at 9.30am today, just two hours after they opened shop at 7.30am.
A 45-years-old recipe
“The curry puff recipe is 45-years-old. It is packed with fillings, not like those ‘air-filled’ curry puffs and the shell is not oily at all!” said Vanessa in her post.
Speaking with WORLD OF BUZZ, Vanessa shares that Aunty Joyce is not new to the local F&B scene. She came from a well-to-do family when her parents used to run a kopitiam business until they passed and all the siblings went separate ways.
Nonetheless, the family was able to retain some original recipes of the food they used to sell in the kopitiam including the curry puffs, chiffon cakes, kaya and other kuihs.
So, you can be rest assured that everything is handmade fresh daily!

After her parents’ kopitiam closed down, Aunty Joyce started working in a factory, so she has limited savings and retirement funds.
Consequently, Aunty Joyce is now retired and struggling to make ends meet through the little curry puff stall. She has no children, never married and is living with her other siblings who are also single.
So, if you happen to be around Damansara Uptown, keep your ears peeled for the sound of a soft voice going, “curry puff ~ curry puff” because that will be Aunty Joyce selling her curry puffs!
