Royal intrigue, betrayal and power struggles lie at the heart of The Serpent Queen, the historical drama launched in 2022. The series revisits the destiny of Catherine de’ Medici with elegance and intensity. (Re)discover it without delay!

For many years reduced to the image of a cold and manipulative ruler, Catherine de’ Medici has regained all her grandeur thanks to this series. Created by Justin Haythe and broadcast between 2022 and 2024, The Serpent Queen transported viewers on Starz into the heart of the French court of the 16th century. It was directly inspired by the historical novel Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda, published in 2006, and currently consists of two seasons of eight hour-long episodes.

A foreign queen thrown into a ruthless court

At the beginning of The Serpent Queen, we meet Catherine as she arrives in France. She is still only a young orphaned Italian teenager sent to court to marry the future King Henry II. Her marriage is intended to strengthen political alliances and bring a substantial dowry to the French monarchy. But she quickly makes a shocking discovery… her husband has fallen under the spell of Diane de Poitiers, an older woman who already wields considerable influence over him.

Other difficulties soon follow. Her dowry is delayed, and Catherine struggles to produce an heir. In this male-dominated world, every mistake can prove fatal. Yet, thanks to her intelligence and extraordinary composure, she gradually learns how to manipulate the codes of court life. The series brilliantly portrays this remarkable transformation. From an isolated young woman, Catherine becomes a formidable strategist capable of protecting her position.

A five-star cast led by Samantha Morton

It is impossible to talk about The Serpent Queen without mentioning Samantha Morton’s outstanding performance. The 48-year-old British actress portrays a Catherine de’ Medici who is both vulnerable and fiercely calculating. Her performance gives fascinating depth to the iconic historical figure.

The rest of the cast also brings tremendous richness to this royal fresco. While Liv Hill portrays the young Catherine, Minnie Driver joins the second season as Queen Elizabeth I. Other actors, including Amrita Acharia, Barry Atsma and Emma McDonald, have also contributed to the show’s success.

Two gripping seasons before an unexpected cancellation

Despite excellent reviews and a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score for its second season, The Serpent Queen will ultimately not return for a third season. However, a spin-off focusing on Queen Elizabeth I is reportedly in development, with Minnie Driver expected to reprise her role.

Although the American series has come to an end, it has still left a lasting impression on fans thanks to its sumptuous sets filmed in several iconic French locations, including Château de Chambord, Château de Villandry and Bourges Cathedral.
